The Efficacy of NST and Fetal Umbilical Artery Doppler Velocimetry in Prenatal Surveillance of High-risk Pregnancy

Abstract
Fifty-three women admitted to our department due to high-risk between January 1991 and June 1992 participated in a study designed to compare Doppler umbilical artery flow studies with conventional nonstress test and fetal acoustic stimulation
test.
The
outcoms of 27 women with abnormal testing (NST or Doppler velocimetry) were compared with the outcomes of 18 women who had normal results on both tests. If both NST and doppler velocimetry abnormal, there was a significantly increased incidence
of
intrauteine growth retardation (70%), fetal distress during labor (70%), perinatal death (50%), adverse fetal outcomes (90%). These results indicated that the addition of doppler velocimetry to NST may offer useful information to the clinician to
aid in
the management of patients at high risk for fetal compromise.
